Exterior fabric and quilting

Since this is the part of the mattress that will be closest to your body, it’s imperative that it feels soft and comfortable. The fabric on the exterior of every Sealy mattress is carefully chosen for both feel and resilience. These two qualities are the reason your mattress will stay comfortable for years to come.

A top layer of memory foam has the ability to conform to your unique body shape and weight. This comforting, body-hugging quality creates the sense that you are sleeping “in” your mattress and not just “on” it, making you feel like your mattress was made just for you.

CoreSupport Center™

Sealy Posturepedic® mattresses feature the exclusive CoreSupport Center™, which provides additional support where you need it most. The center third of the mattress (the area that holds the heaviest part of your body) is power-packed to maximize support and enhance durability for the life of the mattress.

SolidEdge™ System

The new SolidEdge™ System gives you a solid seating edge so you can use the full surface of the bed without rolling off the side of the bed. With an improved design to enhance side-to-side stability, it increases usable sleeping space. Now you can stretch to the edge for longer, uninterrupted sleep.

Spring units are still the most common support material but latex and visco memory foams are gaining popularity as a means to cradle the body when it’s at rest. Some have extra edge support in the form of extra coils, and some have a foam encasement, a “tub” that surrounds the spring or foam to provide a comfortable but sturdy edge. This tub is then strapped across to itself for durability. Each type of support layer has its unique benefits and feels different from the others.

Bonnell Coil: The traditional hourglass shaped coil tied to one another with a spiral wire and edged by a thicker border wire. These springs compress easily at first but get firmer as more pressure is applied.

Continuous Coil: This is one piece of wire that is shaped into each coil of the entire mattress. The spring is wrapped with a border wire that may have additional edge support and tends to be a firm and resilient sleep system. The Lady Americana Ameri-Spring is a continuous coil with enhanced border support to make a very solid spring unit.

mattress coils

Pocketed Coil: These springs are individual lengths of wire coiled into a spring and placed into a fabric “pocket” then glued to one another to form the mattress. In this way each coil moves independently of one another. The center third is “zoned” with a thicker coil to support the hips and lower back. We then place a border wire around the outside to tie the springs together to prevent the pockets from shifting. Pocket coils transfer the least amount of motion of all the spring units.

Latex: The original all foam support layer. We use 100% natural latex rubber that is inherently hypo-allergenic and antimicrobial. It’s a fast reflex foam that returns instantly to its original shape when pressure is removed. There are two processes of manufacturing latex, Dunlop, the most common, and Talalay, a process that produces the most constant and high quality latex available.

Visco: Temperature sensitive visco elastic memory foam is somewhat new in bedding, only being around fifteen years old. It’s a high density slow reflex antimicrobial foam that you “sink” unto as it conforms to your body. It customizes itself to your body every time you turn or move. Maui Bed Store has several types of memory foam including the cool touch memory foam that allows air to pass through that will help to dissipate heat.

Mattress Comfort Layers

These are the layers of foam on top of the support layer that provides the “feel” of the mattress. There are many types and configurations; each has its own benefits in providing a comfortable night. Some comfort layers are surface modified into different patterns or “zoned” to provide additional support for the heaver areas of the body. Our foams are now comprised of a soy based chemical for less environmental impact.

Stabilizer Foam: Heavy duty base material designed to stabilize the mattress and reduce motion transfer. Used in almost all mattresses.

Comfort Foam: Ergonomically designed cell structure provides superior durability and support.

Reflex: Specialized formulation for durability and buoyancy while retaining loft.

Energia: Reduces stress on pressure points. High resilience and shape conforming properties.

Visco Elastic: Memory foam designed to conform to the shape of your particular sleep style.

Sensus: Temperature sensitive memory foam. Molds to the shape of the body to relieve pressure points. Antimicrobial.

Aerus: Cool touch memory foam that increases airflow eight times and dissipates heat ten times faster than traditional memory foam. Antimicrobial.

Latex: 100% natural, hypo-allergenic and antimicrobial rubber. Long lasting, buoyant, and best of all a renewal resource.

Talalay latex: The same benefits a standard Dunlop latex except it is formed in a vacuum and frozen, forming a more consistent core without air pockets or unevenness. Antimicrobial.

Tru-flex: Ergonomically designed surface modified foam to maintain proper spinal alignment and reduce pressure points.

Quilt flex: Super soft antimicrobial layers provide a luxurious and consistently soft conforming surface.
In addition to the above there are pads that sit on top of a spring to protect the comfort layers, extra lumbar support layers and a fire barrier that wraps the entire mattress. All these are further changed by factors like the shape, gauge, number of turns and amount of springs in a spring unit, densities or weights of foam and methods of production in comfort layers.
